Ride-on Ranch Equine Assisted Therapies in Lovettsville

May 29, 2014
Ride-On Ranch Equine Assisted Therapies (Ride-On Ranch) is a 501c3 non-profit.  The mission of Ride-On Ranch is to provide therapy for as many people with cognitive, psychological, and physical disabilities as possible by building social, physical and emotional skills through the use of the horse.   The goal of Ride-On Ranch is to take a medically-based, holistic approach to the client’s need in order to allow them to live life to the fullest. This is done in a unique way by using the horse to facilitate therapy.

One of the services offered at Ride-On Ranch is occupational therapy through the use of hippotherapy. As stated by the American Hippotherapy Association, hippotherapy is a physical, occupational, and speech-language therapy treatment strategy that utilizes equine movement as part of an integrated intervention program to achieve functional outcomes.  When utilizing this treatment strategy as part of the client’s overall treatment plan, the occupational therapist combines the effects of the equine movement with other standard intervention strategies for working on fine motor control, sensory integration, feeding skills, attentional skills, and functional daily living skills.  Hippotherapy at Ride on Ranch treats  a multitude of disabilities including but not limited to autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, hypotonia, and much much more.  Ride on Ranch also offers equine assisted mental health therapy. This type of therapy is offered to children, adolescents and adults to address issues related to anxiety, depression, ADHD, relationship issues, substance abuse, and post-traumatic stress.  Horses become the clients partner.

Equine therapy combines traditional psychotherapy interventions using the horse as a partner to help the client self-regulate, challenge themselves, work through fears, and develop problem solving and relationship skills.  Clients lead the horses on the ground so no riding skills are necessary.  Therapy is done with a licensed professional counselor, specially trained therapy horses and an equine specialist.  This unique style of therapy provides the client real time challenges and gives the therapist in the moment opportunities to witness and provide therapeutic interventions for behavioral and relationship issues. Many clients find this unique style of therapy less intimidating than traditional counseling settings. Equine assisted therapy can be done in conjunction with traditional therapy or as the primary treatment.
